Snowflakes!!!

Living in Western Washington gives me little opportunity to really enjoy the beauty of a good Winter snow. We're too close here in the Puget Sound to marine water and we just stay generally too warm to see much of the white stuff.

Our forecast for the next week calls for a "significant snow event", so many of us out here are very excited to see just what Mother Nature has in store. Lots of people cringe when they hear of the possibility of now. We just don't see enough snow for people to get skilled and confident driving in it. Often times if we get ONE INCH, the cities close, schools close and life come to a screeching halt! I know lots of you that get snow all Winter have to chuckle at that. It's ok - we chuckle too.

I love so much to walk in the snow, catching snowflakes on my tongue. I always hear people's words echoing in my ears as I do that too - "that snow is full of pollution and contaminants!" but I don't care. I just keep sticking my tongue out there to catch more.

I just found a beautiful picture of an actual snowflake that was examined using electron microscopy and though I would share it. They really do look just like those pretty paper ones that we used to cut out in school! This picture courtesy of courtesy of "Electron and Confocal Microscopy Laboratory, Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture."
So next time you are hating that snow piling up outside, think of us poor Washingtonians who are so lacking in our snow. Smile to yourself knowing that you are truly the lucky one with all of that beautiful white stuff outside!
